Solar PowerBank for FT-817ND

Solar PowerBank for FT-817ND

Weekend project: Solar rechargeable Power Bank for the FT-817ND.

I had two spare batteries, a plastic box IP65, a 20W solar panel with its controller, a tripod and some wires lying around my garage and I’ve decided to build something with it. I placed the two batteries in the box and wired using a 1.5mm cable, then installed the solar panel controller outside and wired the batteries to it. I’ve used a 3 X 12V car plugs as output considering that the solar panel controller has two USB ports embedded so I will have both 12V and 5V ready available anytime.

For the step two I started to build the support for the

ON0MON back online

ON0MON back online

The repeater is back operational and working perfectly. There are no more Raspberry Pi for me; even if the repeater is experimental and subject to outages, it should not be for an unreliable hardware. Raspberry Pi are good for playing with and for home applications, not for a 24/7 repeater.

The server is now a Intel Xeon running at 3GHz with “just” 4GB Ram and a 64bit Operating System.

Ah… just because you spent your time reading this post, here is a teaser: soon there will be some big changes, so now, more than before, stay tuned! 🙂

Unexpected outage – Work in progress

Unexpected outage – Work in progress

The first Raspberry PI broke a week before the winter holidays, luckily I had a second Raspberry PI and so by simply swapping the memory card I was able to restore the repeater in a couple of minutes.
Today the second Raspberry Pi decided to stop working so I’m moving everything on a spare computer I have but it will be based on Windows due to some hardware incompatibilities with Linux.

So, ON0MON is work in progress, expecting to be back no later than tonight, 1st Feb 2015.

Stay tuned.

100% Service UP

100% Service UP

Holidays are over and everything is back operational.
I’m considering to shutdown this website, quite useless as there are no real feedback and no real benefits and move to the more common Facebook platform. Twitter accounts are already setup…

Hey you two people (spammers excluded) out there that are reading this blog time by time: if one day it will be unreachable try again after a couple of days, if still unresponsive means I shutdown the website. 🙂

Busy time…

Busy time…

I’m busy, I’m really busy.

Some changes at work are taking almost all my time and this is really disappointing.
I’m spending most of my life travelling and, to be honest, at the beginning it was amazing but now starts to be a little bit too much.

I spent the last 6 months going from Portugal to the United States, from Estonia to Greece, from Belgium to Kosovo… now I have in the calendar Turkey, Spain and France.

I removed some of my antenna system and shut down the weather station, including the original website which was used to host the statistic and the real time weather forecasts.

This way is going to kill my social life and myself but it’s my job and I will do it with professionalism.

Cushcraft R-9

Cushcraft R-9

Trip to the States, as usual, as every year… Trip to San Diego, as usual as every year… Visit at the Ham Radio Outlet, as usual, as every year….I spent another huge amount of money, as usual and as every year.

This year I bought a Cushcraft R9, great antenna, perfect replacement for my Cushcraft R8, adding the 80m band and some extra changes compare to it, great deal… but when I received it, I realized that I have no space for such antenna, so I sold it…

I should be curious on how it performs but honestly I’m not really missing it.

IF YOU CAN’T HEAR THEM, YOU CAN’T WORK THEM!

Dear POWERFUL OM,

What the hell is wrong with you?
Why are you screaming and yelling on your microphone complaining about the fact you are shooting on-air Kilowatts & Kilowatts and no one is replying at you?
