Due to some personal issues, I will no longer run and maintain the ON0MON Repeater. I will decommission the equipment on the 31st of December 2016 and probably return the call sign to the IBPT/BIPT on the same date.
The repeater is for sale, in case someone wants to buy it, and it is based on:

  • Motorola RM900,
  • Tono 70W UHF Power Amplifier,
  • Duplexer cavity tuned for the actual frequencies
  • D-Star DVRPTR V2 (Ethernet + USB support, works standalone).

MMDVM Single Face Modem

MMDVM Single Face Modem

My old and very good friend Enzo (Vincenzo – IU7ACP) has just build a single face MMDVM modem for testing. I will receive the board in the next few days and start some tests with some Motorola and Kenwood radio to see how it works. There are no plans for a mass production at the moment. I will deal with Enzo to have it Open Source with all the diagrams published for everybody.

Update 18 Mar 2017: Unfortunately the device didn’t work and I have abandoned the project.

EDIT: Waste of time, I cancel the fundraising. 

I posted on GoFundMe a support request for a money collection to buy a DMR Repeater to cover the Mons area.
The crowdfunding is something mysterious to me and I don’t have idea on how it will end up, if someone will really put money on such a project or not. I’ve advertised the initiative on Facebook and Twitter and got some feedback but no money (yet!).

Some weeks ago the Yaesu DR-1X repeater decided to give up on power.
Aurelio ON5AFB, Giorgio ON3II, Alex IW0GXY and myself started to troubleshoot the issue to discover that Yaesu sucks. Please read twice: YAESU SUCKS!

Yeasu engineers decided to build a repeater by using a pair of downgraded version of FTM-400 radios and a aluminum radiator stuck on the transmitter with a silicon gen. These radios are build for a duty-cycle of 1-15 not for a heavy-duty cycle therefore the poor 1/32w resistors controlling the MosFet had become charcoal…

Thanks to Max IW0GXY, we managed to install a front-end to the transmitter and thank to the patience of Aurelio ON5AFB, the resistors were replaced with a more powerful one. Aurelio did something better, re-built the cover of the transmitter to have an additional fan directly on top of it. The fan is configured in extraction mode so the air flows from inside to outside reducing the collection of dust.

Max IW0GXY is a great friend but he is also a problem (to me) at the same time; it is solely his fault if I reach the point to dig the internet to find a way to build a home-brew DMR repeater.

We are evaluating several ways ranging from a ready-made Hytera repeater for 1800 Euro to a cheap experimental MMDVR board plus two Motorola GM300 or two Kenwood TK-805.
Honestly there is absolutely nothing in between unless you want to consider the Motorola DR3000 as a valid solution which costs more than the Hytera compare to a brand new Motorola or like an Hytera compare to a used device on eBay with absolutely zero warranty, so Hytera is more convenient than a Motorola and MMDVM is more convenient in absolute.

Lemming was a famous game for Amiga developed in the early beginning of this century. The player must “drive and address” the leader of a trail of dummy people in a queue, in order to achieve the goal, usually the door to the next level. Amateur Radio Operators are nowadays a bunch of Lemming!

Someone decides for a new technology and thousand of people are, like the Lemmings, following his directive without questioning if it will affect themselves or change their life. When I invested in my equipment, I took in mind the fact that one day they would become obsolete, I never took in mind that they would become INCOMPATIBLE because someone decided to change a technology in favor of his personal idea and a bunch of Lemmings accept the change.

I will sell my equipment, I’m not seeing any benefit to keep them. I don’t want to obey like a Lemming to someone else rules when someone else is NOT a certified authority.

Repeaters status

Repeaters status

ON0MON and ON0MNS are back operational.

ON0MON is connected to the DCS011-D however due to the CCS7 configuration I have no idea if it works or not, feedback are very welcome, please let me know via comment or via private message if you are experiencing any issue with the D-Star Repeater.

ON0MNS is connected to the WIRES-X Network and join the room 27259 which includes, at the moment of writing this post, ON0LGE, ON0LUS and ON0LRG repeaters.

Regarding the rumors about a DMR installation at Rouveroy, at the moment there are no plans to invest in another digital technology especially if that technology is proprietary and controlled by a single user/team located in another country not willing to share it among the repeater system administrator. In this light, and thank you for reading the complete message, I am planning to decommission off the D-Star repeater. I don’t like someone else to dictate rules on something not belonging to them.

Imagine a group of 100 people with a common interest, each one has his own ideas and each one thinks its idea is the best one compare to the others. Now imagine each one of these individuals starts to develop its own idea without sharing, at least the concept, among the group. The group will end up to have 100 different projects not compatible between each other or, maybe, interchangeable but all of these projects are having a common line: the ether, the wave lines.

Now apply all I wrote above to the Amateur Radio Community: in the last 10/15 years we have developed (or used) new technologies and each one absolutely not related to another one. Some of them, such as Echolink, cannot be compared as they are a different way to communicate (for which, in my honest opinion, I’m not seeing it as Ham Radio) but we also developed or adopted new digital technologies. Nowadays we have D-Star, DMR, C4FM along to their respective “via-the-cable” connections such as Wires-X, Reflectors, X-Reflectors, Echolink,, etc…

Inside that we have the additional features allowing people to interact with the systems when they are not geographically close between each other, so like Wires-X interconnects a Japanese node to an Italian node, on the same way X-Reflectors can interconnect a Brazilian D-Star node to a Finnish D-Star node.

D-Star “new” capability is now the CCS7 protocol, nowhere defined as such, but (will be) de facto an additional feature to the D-Star world.

So where is the problem in all the above ruminations I wrote above? None of these systems is interconnected or can be interconnected to the others, A D-Star repeater cannot communicate with a C4FM repeater, despite the fact Yaesu is calling “Fusion” their system, and all because of royalties on their respective protocols (Icom for D-Star, Yaesu for C4FM, Hytera for DMR) not counting the wannabe digital radios the Chinese marketers are selling now on almost any online platform.

We all need to focus on the fact that, by the time goes by, there are less and less Amateur Radio aficionados, look at your local Ham Radio Fests, look at your hair colour, look at your son/grandson how interested they are in our technology and think about it and for how long we can be “a single piece” if we continue to fight for our and just our idea without sharing it.

This is tough.

The hardware repeater that was in C4FM and Analog (Yaesu Fusion) running on ON0MON is now running at Rouveroy (JO20AI) as ON0MNS in VHF therefore there is no more C4FM repeater as ON0MON.

There is at the moment just the APRS Digipeater in JO10xm however in the next few days I will install a new repeater and everybody will be happy
